Based on a story by John Ford (which he filmed as a two-reeler in 1919), THE LAST OUTLAW is a long-forgotten western more concerned with characterization and setting than with action. Carey emerges from a 25-year prison term to discover that his quiet old town of Broken Knee has burgeoned into the modern Center City, with bustling inhabitants who are entirely engrossed in expansion. He also finds that his infant daughter has blossomed beautifully. He and his fellow old-timers grow less and less patient with their younger, more boisterous successors. When a gang robs a local bank and takes his daughter hostage, Carey shows them that he may be old, but he's not going without a fight. Especially interesting for its time. leave a comment
