An endlessly confusing picture, OUTCAST LADY stars Bennett as the forlorn widow of Forbes, who all-too-suddenly commits suicide. She tries to find out why, with the answer hinging on a note she received as she entered the church on her wedding day. Her husband's death is just the first in a string of tragedies, including the death of her brother. All of this results in her eventual suicide. Bennett tries but is unsuccessful in her attempt to save this weak reworking of the Garbo vehicle A WOMAN OF AFFAIRS. That Clarence Brown-directed silent feature and the Michael Arlen novel, The Green Hat, on which it was based both contained elements that the Hays Commission would certainly have found objectionable. Since the Hays Code was put into "strict effect" a scant six months before the release of OUTCAST LADY, the film's creators had to handle their source with care, which may partially account for the picture's plot confusion--though only partially. leave a comment
