Jacoby, a high school track star, is not quite fast enough to beat his rival, Wahler, the leader of an opposing gang. The 1960s setting allows the writers to bring in a character who pals around with Jacoby and is killed in Vietnam. His death compels Jacoby into trying harder, eventually
emerging as the number one runner. This is another teen picture riddled with the ususal cliches--the brainless romances, the pot-smoking scenes, the ritualistic 18th birthday visit to the prostitute, and on and on. Director Ruben pulls off a few nice moments, but he is still a far better mimic
than a director.
