No, you ought not. Long-lost daughter Manoff, relentlessly relentless here, migrates to Los Angeles with the apparent intent of crashing the movies, but her underlying motive is to find her father, Walter Matthau, who deserted his family 16 years before. An ex-screenwriter, Matthau has given up writing for gambling and booze. His fears are driving girlfriend Ann-Margret away, but he seems too grouchy to reach out. Clearly, Manoff's ingratiating presence is meant to reform him in one of those precious bringing-up-daddy themes. There aren't enough good jokes to salvage the exhausted story line, Manoff comes off like a tank, and if you can believe the excellent, wasted Ann-Margret could long for Matthau, we'll get the deed ready for you to sign on that swampland in Florida. That's Herb Ross asleep at the wheel. leave a comment
