Released in the USSR in 1955, this version of the Shakespearean play is inexcusably damaged by Universal's insistence on dubbing the picture instead of using subtitles. This botched dubbing detracts from the beautiful Soviet landscape, which releases the story from the usually confining
quarters of the stage. Bondarchuk's performance and Khachaturian's score are the film's prime assets.
