Massie is a grounded American pilot during WW II who goes into the espionage branch. He is trained to kill a Paris lawyer who is suspected of giving the Nazis names and locations of radio operators. Massie trains vigorously under the supervision of Justice and then has second thoughts about
his mission. After he meets his target, French, his mission does not seem so clear-cut, and he begins to wonder if the lawyer is really guilty. Even with his doubts, Massie follows through on his assignment and then learns the man he killed was innocent. An engaging psychological study of the
effect killing, even in the name of justice, can have on a person.
