In Hollywood, the word option refers to a producer's agreement to purchase the rights to a book, a play, or someone's life story for the purpose of turning it into a film. These days, competition for optioning material based on real-life stories often resembles a feeding frenzy among sharks, and success is usually determined by how far a negotiator will go to achieve a deal. In OPTIONS, Donald Anderson (Matt Salinger) is dispatched by his smarmy boss (James Keach) to option a prize life story. Armed with only his trusty briefcase, a laptop computer, and a suit, Anderson flies to Africa to track down Nicole (Joanna Pacula), a Belgian princess who has abandoned her sensational, tabloid-publicized lifestyle and failed marriage, to serve and protect endangered elephants in the wilds of Zambia. OPTIONS has enough basis in truth to make its premise potentially good material for satire. Unfortunately, this comedy-by-committee's better moments occur primarily in its opening scenes, leaving only the expansive African vistas, a clumsily developed love story, and repetitive chases to fill out the movie. The performers do well enough, but they can't quite save this picture. leave a comment
