Batten down the hatches: Hurricane Dedee is coming! Fresh, sharp and very funny, this vicious comedy of sexual manners is driven by the selfish whims of Dedee Truitt (Christina Ricci), an underage strumpet who runs away from home and blows the quiet life of her half-brother Bill (Martin Donovan) right to hell. Indiana high-school teacher Bill is still in mourning for his longtime lover who died of AIDS, but lives with hunky new boyfriend Matt (Ivan Sergei), a none-too-bright stud muffin who works at the local copy shop. Bill's best friend Lucia (Lisa Kudrow) takes an instant dislike to Dedee, who in short order lives up to Lucia's worst expectations and more: She seduces Matt, announces that she's pregnant, and hits the road with $10,000 of Bill's money and his late lover's ashes. And as if that's not bad enough, Jason (Johnny Galecki), Matt's ex, decides in a fit of pique to accuse Bill of having molested him when he was still a student. The wonder of it all is how bitterly funny the complications are, especially as filtered through Dedee's monstrously self-centered voice-over. Vulgar, bigoted and knowing beyond her years, Dedee isn't exactly lovable, but you've got to admire her spunk. Ricci, who has the ripely lush figure of a young Elizabeth Taylor topped by a thatch of bleached-blond straw, is by turns adorable, infuriating and oddly vulnerable (though she'd slap you for saying so). Making his directing debut, screenwriter Don Roos ( SINGLE WHITE FEMALE, BOYS ON THE SIDE) coaxes assured performances from his talented cast and maintains a fast and furious pace that really does recall classic screwball comedies. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
