Lightning didn't exactly strike twice for Kevin Costner, who probably hoped his third turn behind the camera would equal the success of his first, Dances with Wolves. But look at it this way: It's an entertaining elegy for the long-gone freedom of the American frontier, and it ain't The Postman. This time out Costner was smart enough to partner-up with Robert Duvall, who just might be the best movie cowboy since John Wayne hung up his spurs. They play a pair of courageous, land-poor cattlemen who stand up to an avaricious rancher (Michael Gambon) after he threatens to stampede their herd off his land and -- even worse -- kills their dog.
