Open House

1987, Movie, R, 95 mins

This low-budget, independent slasher film stars Joseph Bottoms as Dr. David Kelley, a pop psychologist who hosts a popular Los Angeles radio call-in show. Making headlines is a string of murders of beautiful female real estate agents. One day the doctor gets a mysterious call from "Harry," a disturbed man who makes some brutal statements about the slain women and ends by saying that those who were killed deserved it. Dr. David has reason to be concerned, because his girl friend, Lisa (Adrienne Barbeau), is a real estate agent. As the killings continue (in a variety of perversely imaginative--and graphic--ways), the calls from Harry become more frequent, and Dr. David becomes more involved. Overlong and lacking in suspense, OPEN HOUSE is a pretty dull affair. Padded out with endless scenes of Bottoms talking to wacko callers on the radio and Playmate-type agents showing houses, the film merely grinds its gears until the next bloody killing. The gore effects are poorly done, and the camera lingers on the nasty goo far too long. Bottoms turns in his usual performance--professional and unremarkable--while Barbeau surprises, not only because she is in a bargain-basement slasher film (not that we expect to see her doing Shakespeare) but because she performs a brief and very gratuitous topless scene, something she avoided for many years. leave a comment
