Dillaway is on a train heading to the prison where he is to be hanged. His wife, "nice girl" Brian, is with him and she tells reporter Hopton how her husband had gotten into a fight to protect her and killed a man. Hopton, who is dying of tuberculosis, decides to help the couple. He knocks
out the guard, helps Dillaway escape, and jumps off the train. Hopton's body is found and the police assume it's the body of Dillaway, allowing the couple to start a new life. A novel story handled diligently by director Hopper and a long cast of competent performers.
