This character-driven holiday drama is light on plot but heavy on honest sentiment and wintry romance. Workaholic pediatric physician Catherine (Julie Andrews) finds comfort in stopping by the convalescent home where her spouse passed away. En route to this same facility, construction supervisor Robert (James Garner) prepares to bring his wife, Marybeth (Sheena Larkin), who sufferes from Alzheimer's Disease, home for a Thanksgiving visit. Robert's daughters, pregnant Lori (Patricia Charbonneau) and prodigal Jaclyn (Stacy Grant), get their father to his destination despite a threatening snowstorm, but Marybeth panics and becomes too distraught to leave. Robert chooses to remain, while his daughters depart. The storm becomes a blizzard and Robert, who's now stranded, accepts Catherine's offer of a lift. At first the reserved Catherine and the brusque Robert don't hit it off, and when Catherine's car skids off the road the two strangers wind up squabbling in the forest. Robert hot wires a snow-plow and the pair take shelter in an unoccupied cabin. Over the course of a fireside chat, Catherine and Robert discover that they have more in common than their superficial differences would suggest. Meanwhile, Lori asks her estranged husband Jeff (Stewart Bick) to help her scour the area for her missing dad. By the time Jeff locates them the following morning, Robert and Catherine have admitted their mutual attraction and made a breakfast date for a later time. Unfortunately, Marybeth takes a turn for the worse and dies that morning, so Catherine, convinced she's been stood up, retreats into her shell. Robert and Catherine's paths cross again at the hospital where Lori gives birth; fate has granted the couple a second chance, if only they're willing to take it. Unlike the treacle-sprinkled seasonal entries that regularly emerge during the holiday season, director Roger Young's engaging adaptation of Jan Hartman's play doesn't overdo the heartstring tugging. And the stars of THE AMERICANIZATION OF EMILY and VICTOR, VICTORIA prove that they still have that stellar chemistry, which goes a long way. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
