Mascot Pictures was mainly engaged in producing serials, but the company sometimes created features, and ONE FRIGHTENED NIGHT is one of its better efforts. Based on a story by Stuart Palmer, author of the Hildegarde Withers mystery novels, this mystery-comedy stars Grapewin as Jasper Whyte, a wealthy old man who gathers his relatives together to hear a reading of his will. The relatives all stand to profit substantially, provided Jasper's long lost granddaughter isn't found. The remainder of the film includes the appearance of a couple of women claiming to be the granddaughter, a murder, and some frantic plotting until the rightful heir is revealed. Although the ads boasted the dubious proclamation, "A Picture That Plays the Whole Scale of Emotions From the Highest Notes of Terror to the Lowest Guffaws of Laughter," ONE FRIGHTENED NIGHT is a respectable effort from a poverty-row studio. Balancing chills and laughs with aplomb, director Christy Cabanne does wonders with a low budget, maintaining an atmosphere of mystery and suspense throughout. (An assistant to D.W. Griffith in the silent days, Cabanne went on to direct such stars as Douglas Fairbanks and the Gish sisters.) Film buffs should note that the editor here, Joseph H. Lewis, later directed such low-budget masterpieces as GUN CRAZY (1950), RETREAT, HELL! (1952), and THE BIG COMBO (1955). leave a comment
