The presence of the Ritz Brothers and Irving Berlin's tuneful score helped make this rollicking satire of the smart set one of the funnier musicals of the 1930s. The latest musical from Broadway producer Gary Blake (Dick Powell, borrowed from Warners) stars the Ritz Brothers and Mona Merrick (Alice Faye), casting the latter as "The Richest Girl in the World," a thinly disguised satirical version of Mimi Caraway (Madeleine Carroll). Mimi sees the show and, outraged by the resemblance between herself and the character, goes backstage in an attempt to get Gary to scissor the sketch. He refuses but is intrigued by Mimi, and soon the pair are in love. Gary now promises to soft-pedal the offending sketch, but Mona, who had been Gary's girl friend, has other ideas. When Mimi, her father, Commodore Caraway (George Barbier), her suitor Frederick (Alan Mowbray), and her Aunt Fritz (Cora Witherspoon) come to the show, Mona makes her characterization even more devastating, prompting the Commodore to start legal proceedings against Gary. Mimi is so annoyed that she uses her famous funds to buy out the show, instituting changes designed to make Gary look like a fool. In addition, Mimi is set to marry Frederick, but luckily Aunt Fritz sees she's making a mistake and whisks her from Frederick's arms into Gary's. Mona, for her part, snags the wealthy Commodore by the conclusion. Tunes by Irving Berlin include: "He Ain't Got Rhythm," "You're Laughing at Me," "This Year's Kisses," "Slumming on Park Avenue," "The Girl on the Police Gazette," and the huge hit, "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm." Three other songs were tossed out before the final print: "On the Steps of Grant's Tomb," "Swing Sister," and, inexplicably, the title song, "On the Avenue."
