The mammoth Japanese toy company Sanrio put up the money for this and thought it had something with Hepburn in the lead. After all, would such a great lady do a turkey? They didn't reckon with Hepburn's occasional lapses of taste (MADWOMAN OF CHAILLOT; GRACE QUIGLEY; etc.). McKenzie and Dimster are two kids who come across an old balloon once piloted by McKenzie's grandfather, who used to sail the device around county fairs and the like many years before. They'd like to put the balloon aloft again, so they turn to junkyard owner Hepburn for the wherewithal. The balloon goes up (in a lovely scene), flies around the wine country of California, and comes down in the Hollywood Bowl while an orchestra plays Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture." The film hints that a sequel will follow, but that was just a gleam in the producer's eye and never came to pass. Other than the splendid aerial photography and the pleasure of watching Hepburn, this film has little to recommend for anyone over the age of thumb-sucking. leave a comment
