The long-awaited film version of Carlos Fuentes' highly regarded novel, OLD GRINGO chronicles the adventures of Harriet Winslow (Jane Fonda), an aging Washington, DC, schoolteacher as she ventures to Mexico during the revolution of 1913. Seeking to change her life and live up to her father's expectations, Harriet becomes involved with Arroyo (Jimmy Smits), the leader of the local revolutionaries. The film then settles into a love triangle of sorts with the appearance of an old man (Gregory Peck) who has arrived on the scene to gratify his romantic notions of life and death. OLD GRINGO is a troubled film with a spotty history. With its release delayed a full year after initial completion, the film was cut and recut, and voice-over narration was added in an effort to make the story more comprehensible. The last-minute additions and changes seem to have helped some, as the film's final hour moves along nicely and the narration helps make up for the lost footage. But the first half-hour of OLD GRINGO is absolutely incomprehensible. The movie is lifeless, long, and full of less than stellar performances. Although nicely photographed and filmed on a large scale, OLD GRINGO is never as visually impressive as an epic should be, and overall remains a major disappointment. leave a comment
