Part of Roger Corman's quartet of westerns, this one stars Denning as a gunfighter who returns home after serving a federal prison sentence, only to discover that the town has split into two factions. Much to his dismay, his girl friend, Castle, has become the villainous leader of the "bad" side and will stop at nothing to ensure that lawlessness prevails. Repulsed by Castle's obnoxious personality (and her gunslinger Connors), Denning joins the "good" folks, led by politician Owen and his daughter Downs, with whom he becomes enamored. Things come to a head when the sheriff and Owen are killed. Ex-con Denning is framed and about to be hanged for his crimes, when Downs forces Castle to sign a confession implicating Connors. There was as much off-screen antagonism as on-screen between the female leads because Corman had signed Castle to get first female billing, which outraged Downs. Eventually a compromise was struck that Castle's name would indeed be listed first, but that the typeface would be the same size as for Downs'. In addition, Downs was promised to be featured in another production for which she would receive top billing. leave a comment
