This static, overly reverential adaptation of Sophocles' tragedy was released at roughly the same time as Pier Paolo Pasolini's earthly, passionate OEDIPUS REX, and suffered by comparison. The British production features a strong cast floundering without apparent directorial guidance: Plummer is a predictably noble, manly Oedipus; Welles is subdued but awfully silly-looking as Tiresias; then-unknown Sutherland does his best as the chorus, that feature of Greek tragedy that modern directors never know what to do with. Filmed on location amid portentous-looking ruins. leave a comment
