A moving melodrama based on Bobbie Gentry's 1967 hit song about a 17-year-old boy who commits suicide by jumping off the Tallahatchie Bridge. The film is set in 1953 and stars Benson and O'Connor as two teenagers who meet and fall in love one summer. The film details the intricacies of southern small town life as the couple attend to their various obligations and then dash off to meet each other at the Tallahatchie Bridge. Tragedy strikes on the night of the local dance, when Benson gets drunk and is pushed into a homosexual act that destroys him emotionally. Devastated by the encounter, Benson goes to the bridge that he and O'Connor had made so many plans on and commits suicide, leaving O'Connor to carry on alone. Though the film's climax has some very sensationalistic aspects, the material is handled with sensitivity and dignity, and its characters are all human and complex. ODE TO BILLY JOE did well at the box office, grossing over $10 million. leave a comment
