This crackling, late film-noir caper not only proved that Harry Belafonte wasn't just another pretty face with a froggy voice, it also dealt honestly with racial hatred. Three desperate men unite to rob an upstate New York bank of $150,000. Robert Ryan is a rabidly racist ex-con looking for a big score; Ed Begley is an ex-cop who's been kicked off the force for corruption; and Belafonte is a compulsive gambler who's in deep with some pretty bad characters.
