ODD COUPLE, THE
starstarstarstar
Adapted without much imagination by Broadway director Gene Sacks, this stagey adaptation of Neil Simon's play feels like it never really left the theater. The good news is that it's close in spirit to the classic sitcom it inspired, and Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau are both terrific; they crackle with the kind of chemistry usually reserved for male-female movie pairings. We all know that House's Dr. ...

Question: We all know that House's Dr. Gregory House is a misanthropic, tactless, skirt-chasing genius. We also know that the only friend he has is Dr. Wilson. What are Dr. Wilson's feelings toward House? Is it purely friendship or, perhaps, something more? I don't think I could handle a change in their relationship, especially on House's part. Answer: Surely you're not suggesting what I think you're suggesting. But no. This isn't a case of new-millennium "confirmed bachelorhood" or anything, although there are times that Wilson seems an awful lot like a nagging spouse. But now that they're playing "house," so to speak, as "roommates" since Wilson's marriage fell apart, the dynamic here is more Oscar-Felix (as in The Odd Couple) than, say, Will and Jack of Will & Grace. This is being played for laughs, not for some sort of unrequited romantic tension. This isn't "Brokeback Hospital," unless I'm missing some big signals here ... read more

It seems like every other ...

Question: It seems like every other movie I see advertised is based on a TV show, like The Dukes of Hazzard. But what about the other way around? I know there was a series based on My Big Fat Greek Wedding, but what other TV series have been based on a movie, and were any of them good?

Answer: There have been a handful of top-notch TV shows based on movies. The flop Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992) was revived as Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003); Robert Altman's acerbic M*A*S*H* (1970) became the long-running M*A*S*H (1972-1983); Neil Simon read more

Hi there, Televisionary! Say, ...

Question: Hi there, Televisionary! Say, what can you tell me about Tony Randall's short-lived Love, Sidney? All I really remember is the opening theme.

Answer: Short-lived it was, Sidney. However, while your TV counterpart, artist Sidney Shorr (The Odd Couple's Randall) enjoyed his own show from October 1981 to August 1983, that's a relatively long time compared with the truly here-and-gone life spans of modern shows, which aren't given much time to make a mark at all.

The setup of the show was that Sidney had befriended a single, pregnant young actress (Swoosie Kurtz years before and had talked her out of having an abortion. When the series began, Kurtz's character, Laurie, showed up with daughter Patti (Kaleena Kiff) in hand to live with him. Alan read more

NOT FEELING THE LOVE

If everybody at CBS loves the idea of a Robert-based Everybody Loves Raymond spin-off, they have a funny way of showing it. "CBS waited so long [to put it in motion] that we've lost most of the writers," Brad Garrett, now costarring in Broadway's The Odd Couple, tells Fox News. "We're in limbo now, so it looks like it won't happen." There goes Chris Elliott's nest egg. read more
