Director Robert Altman based this alleged comedy on a short story in that bastion of sophomoric humor, National Lampoon. Altman's film version is a overlong bore featuring a parade of pointless celebrity cameos; despite its distinguished director, this is no better or worse than most of the teenage comedies of its period. Set in Arizona, the film follows the exploits of two mischievous high school dorks, O.C. (Daniel H. Jenkins) and Stiggs (Neill Barry), who have made it their life's mission to harass boorish insurance salesman Randall Schwab (Paul Dooley) and his family. It seems Schwab canceled O.C.'s grandfather's (Ray Walston) old age insurance, and the boys are out for revenge. Despite a few brief chuckles, O.C. AND STIGGS is a complete failure. The movie lurches from scene to scene with little sense of pacing or structure, and the lighting and camerawork are alarmingly sloppy. The performances ... well, at least no one embarrasses himself too badly. The picture fails as genre revisionism and as a social statement on middle-class values.
