Released only days after the start of WW II, British producer-director Herbert Wilcox's remake of his own 1928 silent is a poignant biography with a strong antiwar message. Anna Neagle plays nurse Edith Cavell, who works in a hospital in German-occupied Brussels, treating casualties from both sides in WW I. However, nurse Cavell and several other capable women (ZaSu Pitts, Edna May Oliver, May Robson) also operate an underground network that helps escaped POWs make their way to safety in Holland--that is, until the Germans learn of her activity and execute the courageous nurse for espionage. Uncompromising in its portrait of the ravages of war, NURSE EDITH CAVELL is much less interested in pointing an accusing finger at the Germans than it is in indicting war itself. The film's original score was nominated for an Oscar. leave a comment
