If you find it difficult to imagine Moses in a football helmet, remember that--having won an Academy Award for BEN HUR--Heston was no stranger to brutal sporting contests and screaming crowds. In NUMBER ONE he portrays an aging quarterback for the New Orleans Saints whose already sagging career is further jeopardized when he suffers a knee injury in the final game of the preseason. While Heston battles a talented rookie Elkins for the starting spot, his wife (Walter) withdraws from him, becoming immersed in her design career. Doped up and wearing a knee brace, Heston turns boos to cheers in the season opener when he leads the offense to a touchdown, but on the Saints' next possession he is smothered by the pass rush--and doesn't get up. leave a comment
