Number One

Geldof is a snooker (the British equivalent of pool) hustler who makes his living winning games in seedy London joints. Eventually promoter Smith persuades him to get himself out of these low-life halls (and out of trouble) and compete in a professional snooker match. The bets are heavily against him, and Geldof is pressured to throw the match. Reminiscent of the sort of dramas produced in Britain during the late 1950s and early 1960s, this film works chiefly due to its cast.
