The First Nudie Musical

1976, Movie, R, 90 mins

Despite its humorous concept, THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL is unable to develop its potential. To save his sinking porno- exploitation film-production company, Nathan--on the advice of his secretary, Williams, of "Laverne and Shirley"--sets out to make the title musical. The script is episodic, dependent on gimmicks and one-liners to keep things moving. Songs like "Let 'Em Eat Cake (and I'll Eat You)" and "Perversions" are sophomorically funny (although the humor, of course, isn't for everyone) but can't sustain a 90-minute film. This satire of both porno films and "let's-put-on-a-show" musicals does have its followers, however. Songs (music and lyrics by Bruce Kimmel) include "The First Nudie Musical," "The Lights and the Smiles" (sung by Annette O'Toole), "Orgasm," "Lesbian Butch Dyke," "Dancing Dildos," "Perversion," "Honey, What Ya Doin' Tonight," "Let 'Em Eat Cake," "I Don't Have to Hide Anymore," "Where Is a Man" (sung by Valerie Gillett). leave a comment
