The motivations of a group of English criminals come alive in this decently made British drama. It tells the stories of various prisoners, from a meek bank cashier caught embezzling to pay for his fiancee's expensive tastes in rings, to the Irishman in jail for sabotage. Other characters
include death row inmate Greene, a black smuggler, and even a bigamist. Compelling, with excellent camerawork. This was Burton's third film since he entered pictures the year before from the British stage.
