This sexy and
tres chic
romantic French drama joins MEMENTO, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, 50 FIRST DATES and countless others films in which memory loss is used to explore love, fidelity and the fine art of forgetting. Ever since he sustained a serious blow to the head, Graham (Eduardo Noriega) has literally lived from day to day. With the events of the previous day wiped from his mind each morning, Graham relies on the Post-It notes strung through his apartment like streamers and the small notebook he keeps strapped to his wrist to remind him where he is, where he works and whether or not he loves the person sleeping next to him. At the gleaming white offices where he works in the copy room, Graham depends on wipe boards to keep track of who needs what and when. Should he wander off during his lunch hour, Fred (Eric Caravaca), who keeps an eye on Graham through the company's security cameras, takes off after him. If Graham forgets how he likes his sex, his icy boss, Sabine (Nathalie Richard), is quick to remind him during their after-hours office trysts. But one bit of information missing from Graham's notebook is the small fact that Graham is really named Pablo and has a wife, Isabelle (Paz Vega), whom he's entirely forgotten. When she peeks in on him at work or at the clinic where, once a week, Graham's memory skills are tested, he pays her no more mind than a stranger. He's much more focused on Irene (Anna Mouglalis), a pretty new accounting temp who is willing to take the chance that he'll remember her in the morning and invites Graham over to her apartment. While Irene brings past experience to bear on their budding relationship, Graham has no such worries. Each time they have sex it's like the first time for him, free of self-consciousness and the kind of jealousy that soon has Sabine plotting against Irene. Director Jean-Pierre Limosin (TOKYO EYES) and screenwriter Christophe Honore (MA MERE, THREE DANCING SLAVES) use the idea of a lover with no memory to consider what it means to be faithful. After all, doesn't fidelity require disregarding all the fleeting impressions others make on our desires? And isn't love itself an act of forgetting time? Despite its philosophical pretensions, the film is fairly lightweight, and its good-looking cast and sleek production values are more memorable than any of its heady themes.
