Death and the people who make a living from it are the subject of this black comedy. A couple want to marry; he is an undertaker's assistant and she is the daughter of an executioner. Her father, Isbert, is ready to quit his executioner duties, but if he does, he will lose his new apartment awarded by the government. Young groom Manfredi is talked into taking the role but vows to quit before his first call to duty. A short time later, an execution is scheduled, but luckily it is to happen right before a carnival and fiesta, when many sentenced people are reprieved. Penella, the bride, wishes to enjoy the festivities, and the couple travel to the place of execution, all the time hoping for the reprieve. It never happens, and Manfredi has to carry out his assigned duties. He says that the execution will be his last, but the look on his face reminds Isbert of his own reaction many years ago, and he knows in his heart the boy will continue. leave a comment
