An unusual relationship between a young nun and a misanthropic Milanese dry cleaner lies at the tender heart of this thoughtful and beautifully acted film from Italian director Giuseppe Piccioni. As she prepares to take her final vows and devote the rest of her life to Jesus Christ, Sister Caterina (Margherita Buy) begins to have second thoughts. While strolling through a local park, a stranger notices her habit and hands Caterina an unusual package: a new-born baby bundled in a sweater marked with a laundry tag. After turning the infant over to the police, Caterina traces the marker to a laundry owned and operated by Ernesto (Silvio Orlando), a self-absorbed, middle-aged hypochondriac with a bad heart. Ernesto not only recognizes the tag, but the sweater as well: He gave it to one of his young employees, an unmarried woman named Teresa (Carolina Freschi), after a brief sexual encounter. Ernesto naturally assumes that he's the father, and he and Caterina go in search of Teresa. Caterina, meanwhile, has grown emotionally attached to the infant and considers a completely different -- possibly happier -- kind of life. For a film about two people who find themselves at several removes from the rest of the world and the choices they've made that put them there, it's naturally full of quiet, reflective moments and loneliness. But and the melancholy is leavened by moments of surprisingly light comedy, a few fanciful touches -- Piccioni playfully punctuates crucial scenes with group shots of his cast -- and two winning performances from Buy and Orlando. leave a comment --Ken Fox
