The story of 15-year-old Suzanne (Sandrine Bonnaire, in her first role), who is in a hopeless situation--she inspires love but cannot feel it herself. Since she is only happy when she is with a guy, she sleeps with everyone who shows interest, except Luc (Cyr Boitard), the one boy who truly feels for her. Her behavior causes problems at home, where things are bad enough already: her father is moving out, giving free reign to her decidedly unappetizing brother, and her mother is becoming increasingly neurotic. Hardly an uplifting story, but Bonnaire turns Suzanne into a truly compelling figure. Pialat does a fine job of telling the story from Suzanne's point of view, and himself turns in a good performance as her father, the one person with whom she has a genuine understanding. leave a comment
