Nomads: Review

This supernatural thriller tries hard to be different, but it winds up collapsing under the effort. Set in modern-day Los Angeles, the film opens as Dr. Flax (Lesley-Anne Down) is called in to deal with an emergency patient who was picked up wandering the streets. The man, Pommier (Pierce Brosnan), babbles in French and struggles violently with the nurses and orderlies. When Flax tries to calm him, he bites her, whispers something in French in her ear, and suddenly dies. Police discover that Pommier was a French anthropologist who had worked all over the world, studying the habits of nomadic tribes. Flax begins having visions of Pommier and sees the events leading up to his death--events that involve a group of punk rockers (including Adam Ant, Josie Cotton, and Mary Woronov) who are actually the evil spirits of ancient nomads. Though handled with flair by first-time director John McTiernan (who later directed PREDATOR and DIE HARD), NOMADS' complicated structure doesn't really work. Pommier and his story are much more interesting than Flax, whose character keeps annoyingly interrupting the narrative flow to stare bug-eyed around the room as she senses what Pommier experienced. Though the concept of urban nomads is a fascinating one, the film really never exploits our interest in these strange creatures, and aside from one night's rather mundane wanderings nothing regarding their existence in modern-day America is explored. Kathryn Bigelow's 1987 NEAR DARK addresses some of the same ideas and themes with much more success. leave a comment
