NOBODY'S FOOL is yet another entry in the increasingly popular genre of quirky Americana. The thread that all of these films have in common is a mid-American locale that seems to be populated with characters who have wandered in from a Federico Fellini film. In NOBODY'S FOOL, Cassie (Rosanne Arquette) is a withdrawn young woman who had an illegitimate baby. When the father (Jim Youngs) reneged on his promise to marry her, she got a bit crazy, poked him in the throat with a fork, and now is shunned by most of the people in her small town. Cassie takes an interest in a traveling theater troupe and decides to sign up for an acting workshop. She also meets Riley (Eric Roberts), a T-shirted lighting director who looks tough but acts sensitive. As Cassie's interest in acting grows, so does Riley's interest in Cassie. NOBODY'S FOOL never quite lives up to what it promises to be--an honest romance between two odd characters. Although a few scenes gel, most of the film falls flat, chiefly because Roberts, the film's putative costar, is barely seen in the first 45 minutes. Director Evelyn Purcell spends so much time setting up Cassie's desperation and uncertainty that the relationship between her and Riley never gets a chance to begin. leave a comment
