A sweet comedy-romance picture that sees usually fastidious Colbert get involved in some of the muckiest scenes ever shot. She's a topnotch fashion photographer who is well-known in New York and who haunts the swank parties with her acerbic sister, Chase, and a coterie of admirers, including her fiance, McGrath, and Haydn. After battling with her editor, she lands an assignment shooting in the underground depths of the city where a host of tunnel diggers are hard at work. She meets MacMurray, a sandhog who would like her out of there since women are superstitiously regarded as bringers of bad luck by underground workers. MacMurray is about to be hit by a falling piece of steel when Colbert pushes him out of the way. Another of the workmen thinks he's arranged it that way, and MacMurray responds by knocking the guy out as Colbert snaps the photograph of the one-punch bout. Colbert and MacMurray snipe at each other in the time-honored tradition of two people who will eventually get together, and she exits, but "forgets" to take her tripod with her. MacMurray returns the camera equipment, using the opportunity to get to know Colbert a bit more. At her apartment, Colbert is telling her pals about MacMurray and how strong he is--so strong that she has dubbed him "Superman." When he arrives, the guys poke fun at the "Superman" designation, so MacMurray promptly smashes their heads together to show that he won't take any ridicule. The photos of MacMurray's fight in the tunnel are published and he loses his job for a six months. Feeling bad for him, Colbert contacts MacMurray and asks if he would like to be her assistant. With no employment in sight, he takes the job and, in that capacity, meets one of Colbert's models, dancer Havoc, with whom he flirts. Colbert has come to like MacMurray and resents the way Havoc is making eyes at him. The affection between Colbert and MacMurray grows, but MacMurray is angered when he learns that she gave the job to him out of pity and that, although she is now attracted to him, she really thinks him ill-educated. MacMurray finds out that work has been suspended on the tunnel where all his pals were toiling because mud has been seeping through. Now we, and Colbert, learn that MacMurray is not just another laborer. He is, in fact, an engineer, and he invents a special device that he thinks will put everything in order. Colbert goes below to photograph the attempt to save the site, but the machine doesn't work, so the two of them are covered with mud. Her photos reveal, however, that the machine will work when it has been developed a bit more. MacMurray and Colbert get together as we expect at the finale, and all ends happily. There are some funny scenes, including one in which Colbert lets her coiffed hair down, a fight with Havoc, and a battle in an Irish bar where Colbert and her snooty pals go slumming and meet MacMurray and his tough buddies. A fun romp with good lines from the screenwriters and engaging secondary playing by Haydn, Gateson, and Withers. Rod Cameron has a small role and is barely noticed. The film earned Oscar nominations for its art direction, score, and sound. leave a comment
