This tragedy is saved from being just another piece of maudlin claptrap by Sullavan's superior acting, Mate's knowledgeable direction, and a fine score by Duning that nabbed an Oscar nomination. Corey and Sullavan are happily married with one daughter, Wood, when family doctor McIntire tells Sullavan that she only has six more months to live. She's pregnant with another child and consciously decides to keep this information from Corey and continues to live out the rest of her brief existence in as close to normal a fashion as she can. Meanwhile, Corey starts an affair with Lindfors, and Sullavan, upon learning this forgives him because she knows that he doesn't know her condition. Further, she actually encourages Lindfors to stick around after Sullivan is buried. Corey and Sullavan go off on a final holiday and she dies while Lindfors is baby-sitting for Wood. Anyone who has ever been around cancer victims can tell you that they don't look nearly as glamorous as Sullavan does when she dies. In other films that deal with a lingering disease, the actor or actress usually gets a few pats of white makeup and some rings under the eyes to demonstrate the illness. Not so here. Sullavan chose this picture as her comeback after a five-year exile from the movie business. It was a hit with all those viewers who like nothing better than a good cry. Director Richard Quine, who was still doing some acting at the time this was made, has a small role. leave a comment
