No One Man: Review

Not much of a movie and one wonders why it was made, other than to display the comeliness of Lombard and the handsomeness of Cortez. Lombard is a Palm Beach, Florida, divorcee with a lot of money and a huge problem: she can't decide whom to marry between kindly Lukas, an Austrian psychiatrist, and Cortez, a dashing, but shallow, young man. Lombard is a confused woman and Lukas wants to help her in her quest for self-realization. Despite her head telling her that Lukas would be right for her, she follows her heart and marries Cortez, who immediately takes up with Compton, who almost commits suicide due to her relationship with ne'er-do-well Cortez. Cortez conveniently drops dead of a heart attack and Lombard winds up with Lukas, whom she had jilted earlier. Irving Bacon is seen in a small role, as is Barbier, but no one can help the essential emptiness of the piece, which, at 73 minutes, still feels long. Lukas, born in Hungary as Pal Lukacs, had been a matinee idol in Europe before coming to the US at the behest of Adolph Zukor in 1927. He won the Oscar when he repeated his Broadway triumph in Lillian Hellman's WATCH ON THE RHINE, one of the few roles in which he played a sympathetic character. His first film in the US was 1928's TWO LOVERS and he continued working until 1968's SOL MADRID, then died of heart failure in Tangier. Bacon specialized in hayseed roles like the clerk he played in this. He was in more than 200 films and is one of those character actors whom everyone recognizes but no one can name. leave a comment
