No Longer Alone: Review

Carroll plays the noted British actress Joan Winmill, who suffered from suicidal tendencies until she finally had a religious conversion. The story is told mainly in flashback. We see the actress' unhappy childhood and the death of her mother and a cousin. Her grandmother also suffers from similar psychological troubles and falls victim to a nervous breakdown. Winmill's affair with Robert Kennedy (played by Devol) is unfortunately overplayed. The scenes don't work, as Kennedy was too recent of a historical figure to be successfully interpreted by an actor. The affair was also a minor part of Winmill's life and is unfortunately capitalized on by the producers. The film is nicely photographed, and the director handles the material with sensitivity. Carroll's religious experiences are not overstated, which is an asset. The two children (Gates and Dines) who play Winmill in childhood are surprisingly accomplished performers. leave a comment
