Lame comedy that did nothing for any of the personnel involved. Lawrence and Breon want to get a divorce, so each goes to the same detective agency in an attempt to get the goods on the other. Olivier and Esmond, who work for the company, are sent to the French Riviera to do that job. Olivier and Esmond have never met and, through a case of mistaken identity, fall in love. Lawrence and Breon eventually decide to stay married. There's a mix-up in the hotel suites, a few stabs at sophisticated Noel Coward-type bantering, and a happy ending for the picture. Along the way are a couple of pleasant tunes written by Gay and sung by Lawrence, most notably "No Funny Business," but the other songs are best suited for deaf ears. Lousy photography, bad sound recording, and clunky dialog. Despite all of that, the picture was re-released in 1951. Believe it or not, NO FUNNY BUSINESS took two directors to make, although it's hard to see where the bad work of one ends and the worse work of the other begins. It might have made more sense as an episode on TV's "Love, American Style," because it doesn't even hold audience interest for the brief 60-minute length. Olivier and Esmond were married from 1930 through 1940, but he left her for Vivien Leigh, to whom he was married tempestuously for 20 years. The title is quite apt, as there is virtually "no funny business" in the script. leave a comment
