An intelligent, gripping war film has a group of army recruits being told the story of nine British soldiers attacked by enemy planes while on patrol in North Africa. The commander is killed, leaving the sergeant and seven men to fight off the enemy until help can arrive. A powerfully told feature; the ensemble is excellent, hooking the audience from the early moments and holding on until the bitter end. This was inspired by a similar Russian film, THE THIRTEEN (1937), which also inspired a Hollywood version, SAHARA (1943). Director Watt is credited with making some of England's finest documentaries, and so it is little wonder that NINE MEN has a semi-documentary feel. The North African desert was perfectly simulated at Margam Sands in North Wales, where the movie was made. It was a timely film, since its object was to convince the restless recruits that training made the fighting easier. leave a comment
