Harding plays a sorority chaperone at a small California college. Her charges are nine of the wittiest wisecrackers Hollywood could put into one film. Everyone has a smart line for any situation that crops up--including murder. Louise plays the nastiest of the bunch, with her cruel insults and attempts at boy friend-stealing. She also threatens to blackmail Foch, a nervous and intelligent girl, claiming she will expose a huge loan to Foch's proud-but-poor parents, to get the unhappy student to write her a paper. Keyes catches Louise and condemns her actions, but the wily gal counteracts by threatening to expose Keyes' brother and his legal troubles, thus hampering Keyes' chance to receive an important teaching position. When the sorority girls go off to a lodge for the weekend, it's discovered that their nemesis has been murdered. Suspicious fingers go pointing in all directions, but it's quickly revealed that Harding is the culprit. She tries to get Keyes to write a self-incriminating letter and then attempts to shoot the poor girl when the cops burst in and arrest her. Harding's motive was passion, for she had wanted to marry Louise's father (Matthews), and the girl was the only thing in her way. NINE GIRLS is a really entertaining piece with a nice mix between the comedy and suspense. The wisecracking never grows tiresome and smartly gives way to the suspense when it's necessary. Louise is delightfully nasty, and Harding plays her part with the exact amount of prim social class that's expected. The supporting cast works well together, with Merrick as a stand-out in a hilarious imitation of Katharine Hepburn. The direction is well handled as the comedy builds up, and then we are directly plunged into a moment of terror. Though this clearly was a B feature, the photography is a cut above most other films of this level. There is a lush quality to it that is rarely found in B movies. Overall this is an entertaining "night at the movies." leave a comment
