Andre Dupas (Jean Coutu) is a trapper in the Canadian wilderness whose dog Nikki runs off and returns with a new friend, Neewa, a bear cub. Andre ties the two animals together, loads them into his canoe, and heads downstream; however, they are separated from him when the canoe overturns in the rapids. The animals, still leashed together, have to learn to fend for themselves under their unusual constraint. The rope finally breaks, but Nikki and Neewa stick together for further adventures. Unlike many films of this type, NIKKI, WILD DOG OF THE NORTH is a well-made and exciting animal-action piece. Nikki and Neewa are quite a team, and some sequences will have the viewer wondering how the Disney folks ever got these surprising animal actors to behave so naturally. Perfect for the kids (though one fight scene may be a little too much for the youngest in the family), and the adults will be charmed as well. leave a comment
