Nightmares

1983, Movie, PG, 99 mins

In this quartet of scary tales, two stories work and two don't. One of those that does, "Bishop of Battle," features Emilio Estevez as a teenager who becomes so good at a video game that he actually becomes part of the game itself. The other successful story, "Night of the Rat," starring Richard Masur and Vernoica Cartwright, is a strange bit of black humor about a suburban couple who try to fight off a pony-sized rat that has invaded their home fresh from its stint in the 17th century. The other stories, "Terror in Topanga" and "The Benediction," show little imagination or wit. Produced by Christopher Crowe, who would go on to direct the misfired Vietnam murder mystery OFF LIMITS (1988), and directed by veteran helmsman Joseph Sargent (THE FORBIN PROJECT, 1970), this was never given much of a release in either Britain or the US and has mostly been seen on home video. leave a comment
