As IT'S PAT and STUART SAVES HIS FAMILY already proved, making bad Saturday Night Live skits into even worse feature films just isn't a good idea. The brainless Butabi brothers, Steve (Will Ferrell) and Doug (Chris Kattan), are wasting their youth trying to get into hot L.A. clubs: The one they've never cracked is, of course, the Roxbury. In addition to being painfully stupid, the Butabis personify a tacky, nouveau riche San Fernando Valley aesthetic and believe the soundtrack to the movie of their pathetic lives is the banal dance tune "What Is Love?" -- the musical spine that holds together Kattan and Ferrell's exceedingly slight SNL routine (in which the duo never speak, but just do their crazy dance). The brothers get into a fender bender with former 21 Jump Street star Richard Grieco (playing himself). Hoping to avoid a lawsuit, Grieco takes the dancing fools to the Roxbury. They meet the club's owner, Zadir (an uncredited Chazz Palminteri), who's intrigued by some of Doug's ideas for clubs. It's all downhill from there: First the boys quit their dad's silk-flower shop and try to go into business with Zadir, but are foiled by his assistant (Colin Quinn). Then their gold-digging "girlfriends" (Gigi Rice, Elisa Donovan) give them the boot because they learn the boys aren't loaded. Granted, with Dan Hedaya and Loni Anderson for parents, you're bound to turn out screwy. But Steve and Doug's story just isn't funny, and it would take far better writing than Kattan, Ferrell and Steve Koren can muster to make it less than an ordeal. And someone here's a big Cameron Crowe fan (or maybe not): Two of his most famous scenes -- the boombox serenade from SAY ANYTHING and "You had me at hello" from JERRY MAGUIRE -- are lifted, one right after the other. leave a comment --Sandra Contreras
