Mexican horror director Rene Cardona cowrote this gross, unbelievably inept offering with his son, Rene Cardona, Jr., who would go on to make THE NIGHT OF THE THOUSAND CATS (1972). A kindly doctor, Moreno, transplants the heart of a gorilla into the chest of his dying son, Silvestre.
Holding true to the unwritten horror film principles of anatomy, the boy awakens and turns into a body-builder with the face of a gorilla, terrorizing the city, raping big-breasted women, and ripping apart every living being in sight. With its dizzying combination of hard-core gore (eye, ear,
nose, and throat gougings in bloody close-up), gratuitous nudity, rampaging monster, actual footage of open-heart surgery, and masked Mexican wrestlers, this is a tough one to ignore. For a nice father-and-son double bill, watch this and THE NIGHT OF THE THOUSAND CATS back-to-back, if you can
