Shot in 16mm "Violent Vision," this inept, surprisingly gory PSYCHO rip-off involves a former mental patient whose blackouts prevent him from knowing whether he is responsible for the grisly murders of several of his female acquaintances. Institutionalized as a child after accidentally killing his brother, McRaney has now become the prime suspect in this multiple-murder case in which the victims have been hacked apart by a meat cleaver. Since the movie really isn't any good, distributors lured patrons to the theater with good old-fashioned showmanship. In addition to offering $1,000 to the family of anyone who died of fright while watching the movie, TV ads merely showed the movie's title while a solemn narrator ever-so-seriously intoned, "Due to the current federal subcommittee investigation of sex and violence on television, no scenes--we repeat, no scenes--of the motion picture NIGHT OF BLOODY HORROR are allowed to be shown on this station." Then a different narrator was heard describing the film as "the terror of beautiful women who meet sudden, brutal horror at the hands of a blood psycho gone berserk." Not surprisingly, the ads were better than the movie. leave a comment
