Adult drama starring Milland as a university professor who loses his wife and child in a gas explosion that occurred at his home while he was teaching classes. Suppressing his emotions, Milland finds solace in the bottle, much to the dismay of his friends, Hodiak and Davis. One evening,
when Davis senses that Milland might end it all, she saves him from jumping out a window. The mindlessness and futility of his act having snapped him back to reality, Milland allows himself to live again.
