The manager of an all-night drugstore (Gene Hackman) rebels against suburbia, his wife, his son, middle age, business, and just about anything else he can think of while having an affair with a San Fernando Valley housewife (Barbra Streisand) in this frantic comedy. The film never reaches the level of absurdity it needs, but Hackman, aided by some fine writing by W.D. Richter, gives an appealing, complex performance as George Dupler, an average guy who has simply had enough. Then again, Hackman has the uncanny ability to turn in an understated but intriguing portrayal in just about any role. leave a comment
