A slow moving drama featuring Bergman as a small-town girl who falls into an affair with rootless sailor Sjoberg. Soon it is obvious to her that they are incompatible, and she tries to break off the relationship. Sjoberg, however, draws a gun and threatens to commit suicide. The gun accidentally goes off and hits Bergman near the heart. Only after hours of delicate surgery is her life saved. Sjoberg is tried for attempted murder, but Bergman supports his attempted-suicide story, and the court gives him a light sentence. The whole sordid affair has sent the town into an uproar, forcing Bergman to leave. She changes her name and moves to Stockholm, where she meets a nice young man and settles down to a life of unpublicized marital bliss. Fine acting and beautiful photography compensate to some extent for the slow pace of this early Bergman effort. leave a comment
