Very early Bergman film (he had directed 16 films before all the critical acclaim) starring Malmsten as a man who struggles against blindness that happened to him in the military. Wanting to be treated as an equal, not a cripple, he spurns help from anyone. He hires Zetterling (who would go on to direct films herself) to be his maid and companion. He teaches her about literature and music, and soon a deep relationship develops. Malmsten applies to the music academy but is rejected and takes a job playing piano in a restaurant. This job ends abruptly when he discovers that the owner and another employee are crooks. Trying to regain some self-respect, Malmsten enrolls in a school for the blind. The classes work, but he is shattered when he learns that Zetterling has a boy friend. Dejected and lonely, Malmsten wanders near the railroad tracks and is almost killed. Zetterling and her boy friend find him on a bridge, and, after a quarrel, the boy friend knocks him down and leaves. Having gained confidence from being treated as an equal, Malmsten asks Zetterling to marry him and she accepts. leave a comment
