Actor Charles Laughton's one and only directorial effort is a brilliantly eerie tale of religious madness, greed, innocence and murder set in the rural Ohio River Basin during the Great Depression. Robert Mitchum gives the performance of his career as a psychopathic killer with the word "Love" tattooed across the fingers of his right hand and "Hate" tattooed on the left who goes in search of stolen loot.
